Panna II Garden Indian Restaurant
93 1st Ave NY, NY
(212) 598-4610

"Where Chili Pepper Lights Meet Christmas Tree Lights.”

We love the East Village and one of the many places that makes it such a great area is Panna II - and Indian comfort food place best known for its atmosphere. It's completely covered in Christmas lights all year round - giving you a New Years Eve and Mardi Gras vibe all in one!

Us locals call this block of 1st Ave "Curry Row" due to the interesting aspect that Panna II is located on the upper, top right corner of what is 3 separate restaurants in the exact same location, with the exact same christmas lights.

Panna II is the more popular of the 3 (It's one of Travel Channel star and famous Chef Anthony Bourdain's favorite places to eat) Additionally, the restaurant is known for it’s owners, who stand outside of the stairs waving and claiming to be your friend in order to persuade you into eating with them.

Keep in mind this is a BYOB joint so remember to take some sweet wine or beer if you prefer, to complement the traditional Indian dishes such as veggie samosas and chicken tikka masala - all of which are delicioso. Keep in mind, the food comes out fast and furious! Servers with hot plates whiz past you adding to the fun environment.

So if you are looking for a truly unique and interesting time, head over to Curry Row on 1st Ave. You must try this place out at least once. Don’t let the forward Indian waiters scare you off. This place is full of little quirks that make it more of an experience rather than just going out for some decent curry.

P.S. Let them know it's your birthday (or just pretend like us ) and enjoy delicious mango ice cream on the house!

Cheers!

POCHA 32

15 W. 32nd St
2nd Fl - Koreatown

entrance
Pocha 32, which one can assume is the short version of pojangmacha, Korean street food tents, is the PERFECT spot for a cold winter night with a group of friends or early/late-night party-goers.

Located on the 2nd floor, you can easily pass it if you're not looking for it. For me, it's usually the last stop of the night, after numerous other stops of a drunken adventure.

Mostly decorated with green fishing nets, bottle caps, and "happy" messages scribbled on chopstick wrappers, the interesting decorations are suppose to capture the "street food" feeling in Korea (or so my friend tells me).

Speaking of food, there is just something about alcohol and stew that goes so well together, I suppose it's the comfort food that warms you up on those cold winters. Pocha does such a great job with their stews it would be a waste to pass it up for any of the other items they offer. Which brings me to our dish of the evening, a soft tofu pot with seafood - which was a seafood stew with lots of vegetables, shrimp, and squid simmering in deep red bath of spicy goodness. In addition, you can also order the various dishes with ramyun (korean instant noodles) added. Most dishes are close to $20 and the portions are huge and made for sharing.

Beware of the soju. Soju doesn't seem to hit like beer or other alcohol. It sneaks up on you, striking only when you try to stand

You will LOVE it. You will drink soju from a carved watermelon and do yogurt soju shots in rapid succession. You will want to go back, and you will miss the stew by the following morning!

Great late night spot or just pre-game. If you like korean pub fare and drinking in a very casual environment, this place is for you. Warning... There has been many hazy nights where I look at my receipts and find that Pocha was in the mix.

Lobster Joint
201 E Houston St. - Lower East Side
646-896-1110

We are all about fun and interesting ways to enjoy Happy Hour and this definitely fits the criteria. If lobster rolls and crab cakes are your thing then look no further than this new location for Lobster Joint over on Houston! (next to Katz’s).

The popular Rockaways sensation has ample space, with picnic tables, whitewashed walls, and natural light streaming in from the skylight above. Lobster rolls are signatures, made in two styles: warm Connecticut, or New England with herb mayo. There are plenty of alternative rolls too, from clam to crab to crispy oyster.

And what’s even better their happy hours let us enjoy much of that seafood for cheap. How cheap? We’re talking $1 oysters and $4 lobster, oyster and crab cake sliders. Couple that with $4 cocktails and beers and you’ll be seafood/alcohol drunk before you know it.

If you're in the LES and want a good, generously filled lobster roll, stop by here. There's a solid selection of beers to complement the rolls, and the rolls themselves are the perfect way to get your lobster fix. Can't beat this happy Hour!

Also, don't forget to order up their famous Bloody Marys (They are very photogenic!) complete with lobster claws in the glass. My first time drinking a bloody mary was at this location and I enjoyed it. It's a bit spicy, but definitely worth a try.

Greenwich Treehouse

46 Greenwich Ave - West Village

This second-story hideaway is creatively partitioned into several different areas: Just off the entrance sits a row of nose-against-the-glass stools and a view of Greenwich Avenue; to the rear, there’s a dance-party-ready lounge area; and tucked away off the main space, you'll find a tiny, bookshelf-lined private chamber, where a handful of escapists at a time can gaze across backyards and bond by candlelight. Show up early on Thursdays and you’ll find beer at vintage prices too — one dollar and up - New York Magazine

One of our many go-to bars!!

$6 Margarita every night, all night. (except some event nights)

$5 Recession Special every night, all night. (Gin, Beer, Lime Juice)

$4 kamikaze Shots every night, all night!

Harlem Shake

    100 W 124th St.
Harlem, USA

Harlem Shake has slowly been growing in popularity recently, and when I noticed they had veggie burger options and a great new outdoor patio, I had to give them a try.

Harlem Shake takes you back in time with its vintage look from the 50′s. One of the first things that impressed me was the customer service. From making reservations, to placing orders during dinner, they definitely go out of their way to make you feel special. The night I stopped by I was  beginning my night-long birthday bar crawl through Harlem. August, the manager, made sure we started the party off right with a few glasses of complimentary Red Wine. This aint no Shake Shack!

I ordered the Jerk Fry burger (substituted the beef pattie with the veggie) which frankly taste like heaven! It comes with a nice serving of jerk fries on top. I was a little leery of eating something too spicy but this burger has just the right amount of kick. Is the food a little on the expensive side? Yes. But damn if it’s not worth it! Didn’t get to enjoy the famous Shakes as we were partying with wine and beer options. Your wine choices are Cheap, Good and Bougie – cheap being a nice pour of Pinot.

The newly opened outside patio had plenty of seating and I loved the open air design overlooking the outside dining area. Great Soul & R&B music was playing throughout adding to the great vibe. I had out-of-town guest with me as well and they certainly were impressed.

Great pre-game fuel before a night out in Uptown!

Elbow Room Brooklyn

41 Halsey St. Newark, NJ
973-642-2300

“Let’s go to the Elbow Room”

“Cool, heard they have dope Mac & Cheese.
What else is on the menu?”

“Uh, Mac & Cheese!”

Yes, I will admit,I have my hipster moments. I’ll rock my black horned rimmed glasses, hit up a few thrift stores,  grab a couple PBR’s,  and yes, eat gourmet Mac & Cheese!

If you are going to devote an entire meal to just Macaroni & Cheese it better be right. Elbow Room Brooklyn  gets it right with varieties including the Margherita mac with tomato and basil and the Jamaican Jerk with marinated  chicken and pineapples. They also have a Vegetarian option with Vegan cheese. All super delicious.

Mushroom Mac

And If you follow this blog at all you may now realize we're all about atmosphere. Elbow Room meets those expectations with its relaxed vibe and friendly staff.  Alcohol is not served, but it makes my hot spot list thanks to their laid back attitude towards BYOB. So don't forget to grab a 6 pack of the aforementioned PBR’s, or a nice bottle of wine.

The seating includes tables for 2-4 people as well as communal tables for larger parties. A shelf full of old school board games is also available and what's better than beer and board games with friends?!

PS:  Don’t let the deceptively small size fool you.
It’s very filling!

Locations in both Brooklyn, NY and Newark, NJ

 Shrine World Music Bar

2271 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd.
Harlem, NY

Just another fun night at the shrine. Pics ctsy of Shrine.
The Shrine is one of those jack of many trade bars that quickly became a neighborhood institution. This is due to its warm and inviting staff, heavy rotation of performers, events and that independent, hard to capture offbeat vibe that can only be homemade.
Shrine is not a trendy or even a hipster spot. People aren't really there to be seen and you can't really put on airs because its not trendy enough for you to pull that off. What does make it cool is that people remain slightly edgy enough to dance provocative and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.
Often on weekends you'll see indie bands of multiple genres ranging from Neo Soul to Afro-Cuban jazz to Rock. There are also art viewings and hot and wild dance parties! People who have not worked or lived in Harlem don't know its great diversity but if you want to see it for yourself drop by for a good performance and it'll be on full display.
Looking around you have to love the classic soul, R &B, Funk and Hip Hop albums adorning the walls. The Pan African motifs throughout the spot are also a reflection of the vibe.
They do serve food such as lamb chops, cous cous and of course burgers and wings. They also have a slew of specialty cocktails too with ingredients like Ginger beer and hibiscus syrup that will give very distinct flavor to your drink.

Overall though Shrine gives people, especially young black people, a forum for artistic expression that Harlem was lacking for some time now. It is a forum though that is enjoyed by people of many backgrounds as long as you come to have fun and don't take yourself too seriously. That's just something you can't front on.

La Linea
15 1st Ave

(between 2nd St & Extra Pl) East Village

When I'm looking for a nice lounge to enjoy for the night there are a few things it must have for me to put it on the rotation. First, and probably the most important, I'm not paying a cover. Second, the door has to be relaxed. None of the I may or may not let you in based on  judgement of what is appropriate attire. And third, the music has to be great of course!

La Linea has all these and more. Whenever I'm in the area, this is usually a must stop. It's also a go-to destination whenever I get the urge for drinks and dancing. Start the night off with an amazing 2 for 1 happy hour till 9pm. Late night the hip hop DJ's take over with some of the best Reggae, New and throwback Old School hip hop. As you enter you'll notice the space seems small and narrow, but as you head past the bar to the back you'll find comfortable lounge seating and  an open space. You will soon witness plenty of bumping and grinding so be ready to dance! This is a locals, word-of-mouth type of spot, so it will definitely give you the feeling that you are one of the few in the know. Stumble over to nearby Houston St. afterwards to feed your dunk belly.

Strong drinks, great atmosphere, relaxed dress code, love the music! Dance the night away!

Groove Live Music Bar
125 MacDougal St. - Greenwich Village

Welcome to my "cheers" bar. For me, Thursday happy happy hour and most special occasions usually start (pre-game) or end here. Whether you are visiting NYC or a native New Yorker, the Groove is a spot you will definitely want to experience. We discovered this local live music bar on accident many years ago and have been regulars ever since.

What keeps bringing us back you may ask? Well, it has everything! Great energy, amazing atmosphere, and strong drinks. The Groove has by far, one of the best happy hours in the city. $4 food and drinks everyday of the week. $5 Martinis.

We often have great conversations with the bartenders here and buybacks are pretty common. And like we mentioned earlier, Groove is also know for its great live music. They have some of the best live bands playing house, R&B, funk and jazz. Check the walls on the way to the bathroom and you'll see a shrine to all the greats that have stopped in here - from Chaka Khan to Prince.

Brunch @ Agave - West Village
140 7th Ave S
212-989-2100

I love to brunch. There's nothing better than sleeping in after a long week and waking up to a great breakfast and a strong drink. When you live in and around this city brunch is a pastime. I also love it to be cheap, with some dope outside seating to enjoy the weather (and beautiful people), and a great atmosphere that encourages my love of day drinking. One place that captures all of these is Agave. So when a friend invited us to try Agave for the 1st time - for early-afternoon booze and breakfast, there was no chance it could be missed!

Agave is located in the West Village. I love this area. Wine bars, hidden clubs, dives, its the perfect area for a date-night or a meetup with friends
(It's also the location of "Sex Toy Row" but that's for another day)

The vibe once inside is fast paced. Don't let the white tablecloths fool you, this place is a day party waiting to happen. The atrium in the front is small but airy, with a few high tables on the side. Some in the group were already enjoying Agave's famous margaritas and were feeling pretty happy. An hour after our reservation, we were still waiting to be seated (after all- this is a boozy brunch in the city) but great company and a few shots made the time pass quickly.

The good vibes continued as we were seated in a semi-private room complete with our own music player. Before we knew it, multiple mimosa's and margaritas were being passed around. $25 gets you a breakfast and unlimited drinks for 2 hours. At no point did I have to yell out for another round since the waiter kept 'em coming. The margaritas were a little melted but had the perfect amount of tequila and tasted amazing. The food portions were a good size, great for keeping the afternoon buzz at manageable levels. I attempted to be classy and tried the poached eggs, delicious.

Agave definitely deserves to be put on the rotation. A popular spot for people watching means a good shirt and those trendy shoes you've been waiting to wear is recommended. Get drunk and look classy doing it, that's Agave!

Eat in Harlem: 12 Outdoor Dining Spots I Love!

There are a ton of great places you can eat in New York, but the experience of dining al fresco in Harlem is unrivaled. Not only is the neighborhood drenched with history, it also has the most culturally diverse crowds and a great mix of culinary staples that can satisfy almost any appetite.
So if you’re looking for a new brunch spot or a cool place to have an outdoor meal on a warm night, try one of my favorite spots:
Harlem Tavern Outdoor Dining
Harlem Tavern [Source: HarlemProperties.com]
Harlem Tavern 2153 Frederick Douglas Blvd (at 116th street) Harlem Tavern  is a restaurant and beer garden that on some nights can feel like the best sports bar in town and on others can you give you an intimate front row concert experience with live music on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and a jazz band on the weekends.

Red Rooster [Source: Red Rooster]
Red Rooster 310 Lenox Avenue (btw 125th and 126th streets)
Named in honor of the legendary Harlem speakeasy, Red Rooster, is the neighborhood’s first restaurant helmed by a top chef, which has made it a major culinary destination. Rooster serves up a fusion of comfort food and a variety of cuisines inspired by foreign locales. And the best thing about dining al fresco here is that you’re almost guaranteed to spot a celebrity sitting a few tables away (everyone from Alicia Keys to Tom Brokaw has visited Red Rooster at least once).
Ristorante Settepani [Source: HarlemProperties]
Ristorante Settepani [Source: HarlemProperties]
Ristorante Settepani
196 Lenox Avenue (on the corner of 120th street) Settepani is an Italian restaurant with a heavy focus on Sicilian cuisine. Aside from the sexy interior and draw of their seasonal menus, I love that the outdoor dining option here provides a much quieter meal than some of the others due to a lower amount of foot traffic in the area.
Corner Social [Source: Corner Social]
Corner Social [Source: Corner Social]
Corner Social 321 Lenox Avenue (on the corner of 126th street)
“A warm, inviting, vibrant and pulsing scene,” is how the owners of Corner Social describe the restaurant they built directly across from marquee Harlem destinations such as Sylvia’s and Red Rooster. And having dined here several times, I can say that they’ve painted the perfect picture of what the feeling is like once you’re inside.
If you’re a young professional this is definitely the spot for you and after you’ve had a quick meal you can head next door to COVE lounge (not affiliated with CS) for the live DJ and a nightcap.
Sylvia's Restaurant [Source: Sylvia's]
Sylvia’s Restaurant [Source: Sylvia's]
Sylvia’s Restaurant 328 Lenox Avenue Sylvia’s Restaurant has been serving classic soul food favorites in Harlem since 1962 and has since become a cultural landmark in the community. And while some may argue that it’s not the best soul food option in town, it’s one of those places you have to try at least once. (Soon you’ll be able to get Sylvia’s in Florida as the family is building a second location in St. Petersburg).
Lido Harlem [Source: HarlemBespoke]
Lido Harlem [Source: HarlemBespoke]
Lido Harlem 2168 Frederick Douglas Blvd (on the corner of 117th street) Lido Harlem is a great italian restaurant that provides a culinary experience designed to transport your taste buds straight to Italy. The vibe at Lido is so laid back that you always feel as if you’re dining amongst friends.
Chill Berry [Source: Harlem Bespoke]
Chill Berry [Source: Harlem Bespoke]
Chill Berry
414 Lenox Avenue (btw 130th and 131st streets)
Chill Berry  is Harlem’s first frozen yogurt shop and it is absolutely delicious. So if you’re looking for a way to cool off this Summer make sure you stop by and try to snag one of the shop’s four outdoor seats (not shown in this pic) because there’s never a dull moment when you’re people watching in Harlem. (Ed Note: The owners of Chill Berry are getting ready to open Harlem-Yo, a new fro-yo and burrito bar on 8th avenue.)
Chez Lucienne [Source: HarlemBespoke]
Chez Lucienne [Source: HarlemBespoke]
Chez Lucienne 308 Lenox Avenue Before Red Rooster and Corner Social moved in the only other restaurant near Chez Lucienne was Sylvia’s. But there has never been any reason to panic about new neighbors because Chez has it’s own crew of loyal patrons and a reputation for great French cuisine.
Covo Trattoria [Source: TimesUnion.com]
Covo Trattoria [Source: TimesUnion.com]
Covo Trattoria 701 West 135th Street (on 12th avenue) Covo Trattoria is tucked away near West Harlem Piers Park, a beautiful waterfront area that is one of my absolute favorite places to visit. It’s also perfect for grabbing a meal and then walking it off along the water. And it’s usually pretty quiet unless there’s a day party going on next door at the Hudson River Cafe.
Hudson River Cafe [Source: VelvetList.com]
Hudson River Cafe [Source: VelvetList.com]
Hudson River Cafe 697 West 133rd Street (on 12th avenue)
Also located near the West Harlem waterfront, Hudson River Cafe, is a latin restaurant that probably offers the most expansive outdoor dining options in the neighborhood. HRC features a two level patio surrounded by garden walls, a courtyard bar and frequent live bands that keep the party going.
Maison Harlem [Source: Maison Harlem]
Maison Harlem [Source: Maison Harlem]
Maison Harlem 341 St. Nicholas Avenue (on the corner of 127th street) Maison Harlem is a quaint French bistro that almost didn’t happen. To gain community support, the owners of Maison launched a Kickstarter campaign that was never fully funded, but they didn’t let this stop them. Now they’ve become one of West Harlem’s newest hot spots.
Yatenga French Bistro & Bar [Source: FindingPaola.com]
Yatenga French Bistro & Bar [Source: FindingPaola.com]
Yatenga French Bistro & Bar 2269 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd (btw 133rd and 134th streets)
If you’re looking for a change of taste and want to venture a little further uptown, stop by Yatenga French Bistro & Bar. The inspiration for the name of the restaurant was taken from the Yatenga Province in West Africa’s Burkina Faso, an area that is known for its French influences. And what I love most about Yatenga is the way they effortlessly blend the African culture and European flare into the menu and every other part of the restaurant.

The Back Room

102 Norfolk St. - Lower East Side
New York, NY

TheBackRoomNYC 1

If you are intrigued by underground hidden speakeasy bars, then I suggest you visit
“The Back Room,” located at 102 Norfolk Street (near Delancey Street).

Finding this place is quite an adventure, and will make you trip-out a bit as
you have to walk through a dark alley to find the entrance;
but once you make it through, you’ll have a nice surprise waiting for you.

You will need to knock on the door for someone to let you into the bar, which is a large space with a Victorian interior, chandeliers, velvet paisley wallpaper,
a sliding bookcase and a covert phone.

Don’t be surprised if your drink is served in a teacup, or your beer served in a brown paper bag, which represents the undercover drinking during Prohibition.

Grab a date or a small group of friends and check it out.
A pretty cool hang-out.

113 Greenwich Ave (between 12th St & Jane St)

(212) 633-9210

My favorite Spring time hangout. Great outdoor seating on Greenwich Ave. Free chips and salsa are always included with the meal and it's fresh and delicious. The Burritos are HUGE and big enough for 2. Great options for vegans. What makes this spot so popular are the frozen margaritas. $4 All Day! And they pack a punch. I'd suggest getting there early but this place is packed at all times of the day. Usually a short wait but definitely worth it. Great waitstaff, lively and festive atmosphere - Perfect place for getting tipsy after work!

Gyu Kaku

34 Cooper Square - East Village
212-475-2989

Hands down one of the best Happy Hour and dining experiences in the city. Gyu Kaku is Japanese BBQ and traditionally its for big groups who want the grill-your-own food dining experience. Rather than being seated at a table, pull up a chair at the bar to enjoy this perfect BAR ONLY happy hour!
They have several  restaurants throughout the city. I recommend the Cooper Square location due to the proximity to all the street vendors and bars that make up St. Marks Pl. (I like to bar hop during HH). I also like that this location is just a short walk from the PATH station (if you are coming from Jersey).

Gyu Kaku offers an early and a reverse happy hour. All drinks are 50% off. They offer numerous options like the Saketini ($4) which is a perfect mix of Vodka and Sake. And it doesn't take more than 1 or 2 to get you where you want to be!

Gyu-Kaku NYC - Food 'n' Festivities. No BS.

Almost 20 food options are discounted and available as well. Garlic Noodle, Shrimp Garlic Rice and fried dumplings just to name a few. All of the food is amazing and you are given a big enough portion to keep that happy hour buzz at a manageable level. Also, you can impress your friends or date with your chopstick abilities!

Wonderful, modern atmosphere and amazingly cheap bar specials make Gyu Kaku a destiny location for Happy hour! A Social Butta Fly Favorite!

27 Mix

27 Halsey St. - Newark, NJ

(973) 648-0643

Halsey St. (Downtown Newark, NJ) is slowly transforming into it's own version of Hipster-ville. Gourmet Mac & Cheese, wine/sushi bars and this trendy local spot.

This is one of the most popular bars in the area. Has a very lounge-y feel inside along with high bar stools and great window seating. Continue through to the back of the bar you'll find a nice, laid back patio-garden, perfect for summer drinking. The menu has an extensive list of common Martinis as well as special 27 Mix exclusives.  Not to mention the food here is great! Usually a mixed professional and working-class crowd. PS 450

450 Park Ave S. #1 - Murray Hill
212-532-7474

Ohhhh brunch. You know, that special time in between breakfast and lunch?

In NYC, Sunday brunch is slightly different. Not only is it very popular, it's an event! It’s a combination of lunch, cocktail hour and a party. The drinks flow while friends indulge in delicious food and rehash their weekends from start to finish.

The city has MANY brunch venues. We chose to mention PS 450 for three reasons: the mouthwatering menu, bottomless mimosa special, and great music from an amazing DJ.

We recently enjoyed day drinking at this trendy spot. The restaurant sat us in the backroom, which looked more like a private VIP suite…

(Source: PS 450 Gallery)

From the suggestion of our waitress, we liked their Facebook page and were greeted with free shots! That's how you get a brunch started! Just when we thought life couldn’t get any better, she brought out multiple bottles of champagne and orange juice. Yes, PS 450 lets you make your own mimosas. Make 'em as strong or as light as you prefer. Everyone went back and forth between mimosas and bellinis throughout the afternoon…

From the sounds of this brunch so far, I’m sure you’re thinking, “Where’s the food?” PS 450 served some of the best brunch items we've ever had. The hard part was choosing from a variety of their brunch favorites and “over the top” french toast. I chose the perfect hangover grub (literally called hangover fries).

"The Hangover Fries" with homemade fries, melted cheese, bacon, scallions with two over-easy eggs

We spent THREE hours eating and drinking away the afternoon. Towards the end, the music had our group up dancing and feeling good! If you’re looking for a good brunch spot in NYC, PS 450 is an absolute must. While the food left us smiling and the drinks left us laughing, the service was top-notch. One of the best deals and atmosphere in the city

Pazza Notte

1375 6th Ave - Midtown West
212-765-6288

Whether it’s ladies night or just catching up with friends & family,

Pazza Notte on 56th and 6th is a great hangout.

This little eatery has a kind of loungy feeling to it that may be due to its 2 for 1 martini happy hours from 5pm to close! For me, this is a big selling point, seeing as how a typical martini in the city will run you around $12. The rules for Happy Hour @Pazza Notte--you have to order 2 of the same flavor, and they bring them both at the same time. You're definitely going to get a second one--why not save your server some trips?

They have one of the biggest selections of martini flavors I’ve ever seen. I like to order the lychee. They have plenty of other flavors, including white peach, mango and white chocolate.

So here's a quick rundown of why you should go!

1. I don’t know what it is about martinis, but they make you feel so much classier.

2. Food? My favorite item? A thin crust white pizza with mushrooms. Another crowd pleaser? The bruschetta, and even the free bread that’s put on the table.

3. You can hear your friends talk: Want to catch up with friends and actually hear what they have to say? You can do so at Pazza Notte since this place isn’t nearly as loud as a bar

4. Not rushed: I’ve had people show up halfway through pizza
and martinis and order more food and drinks and the staff doesn’t get annoyed that they aren’t turning tables.

5. Location: Yes, it is in midtown (a place you should avoid) but that's what makes it great. A central spot for everyone to meet up after work or perfect before heading away from all the craziness of Times Square. To me, Pazza Notte solves that problem of “I’m in midtown with no idea where to go.”

SPACE Billiards

34 W. 32nd St. 12th Fl. - Koreatown
212-239-4166

One of the great things about New York is the ability to travel to different countries and enjoy different cultures within the city. Just a short walk from Penn Station you'll find Koreatown. A neighborhood that takes "The City That Never Sleeps" phrase to the extreme. Most of the bars and restaurants in this area are open all night, making it a popular late-night destination. One of these locations, a hidden pool hall, is located on the 12th fl. of  unmarked office building.

Open 24 Hrs. Space is laid-back and inexpensive. ($17/hr up to four people Sun - Thur.) (19/hr up to 4 people Fri-Sat.) and those are some of the best prices you'll find in midtown. Wine, beer and Sake are also available to drink while you play. There are also plenty of couches and chairs to relax while you're not playing.

The Space is clean and pretty well maintained and there is a nice amount of tables to choose from. Lots of bright neon lighting helps create a fun atmosphere. Since it's open 24 hrs. it makes a great after dinner spot. Perfect for late nights - 1am in the morning -  not quite ready to call it a night. Very popular with locals. Grab a date or a group of your friends and go on a little adventure in Koreatown.

8Th St. Wine Cellar

28 W. 8th St. (Near Fifth Ave.) - The Village
212-260-9463

8th Street Wine Cellar is a true underground bar. Walk down the stairs to this below street level wine cellar and you’ll find a romantic space.

Unpretentious and attitude-free, it's easy to ask for suggestions from the extensive wine list. There are a half dozen seats at the bar, tables in the front and back and a dining-bar area opposite the main bar. In the afternoon, there is a lot of great natural light and the atmosphere is very relaxing. At night it’s dark and lit mainly by candles, making this a perfect spot for a first date.

Wine is sold by the glass, half bottle or bottle.

Tortilla Flats

767 Washington St. - West Village
New York, NY
212-243-1053

The most fun you may ever have at a local bar/restaurant! Also one of the most popular bars in the city - Tortilla Flats is not only a nice spot for that afterwork buzz but it's a very popular location for Birthday's.

Located in the heart of the West Village, It's Cinco De Mayo 365 days a year! A ceiling full of christmas lights, music blasting, and shots galore! Theme nights include Mondays and Tuesdays for insane rounds of bingo, hula-hoop contests on Wednesday nights and trivia night on Sundays. Winners of contests score a round of tequila shots for their whole table. But this spot is known for its strong margaritas, and you'll notice a big tub full of it at the bar

The Tex-Mex food is pretty decent, but again the main draw here are the drinks and fun atmosphere. Not a big place, so this is great for a small group. Although there is an area located in the back that can handle large groups.

Sidenote: Sex and The City fans may remember Miranda and Carrie had an awkward dinner with their exes Steve and Aidan here

Happy Hours are Monday thru Friday 4-7 PM and

Friday, Saturday Nights 1-4 AM.

Rolling Rocks 2 for 1 and $5.00 off any pitcher of Margaritas.

Old School Hip Hop, Martinis, Wine and a positive vibe is what you will find at this East Village hangout. One of my favorite bars in the area, this place never disappoints.

A great happy hour is just 1 of the many great things about the place. Make your way to the centralized bar and you'll find deals on beers, mixed drinks, & wine. Lychee Martinis are their specialty and you can also find great Sake and Sochu here as well.

A DJ most nights - Old school hip hop during the week, a mix of the latest Top 40 on the weekends. Great window seating in the front of the bar is perfect for birthday's or groups and can be reserved without a charge.

Many nights they will surprise you with live performances. I've seen both the RZA and Dres of Black Sheep perform here. And DJ Red Alert has performed a few DJ sets!  The staff is always polite and friendly. Just an overall fun atmosphere!

Blue Mirror

257 Clinton Ave  Newark, NJ

(973) 732-7979

Working in Newark, sometimes I'll pass up hopping on the PATH to The City and opt to keep things a little more local after work. Nothing too fancy. A great atmosphere and local charm, listen to great music and enjoy this up and coming area.

Located at 257 Clinton Ave, Blue Mirror  is the former address of the Arena Bar.  Walking in you notice a lot of space. The bar has been positioned against the wall, with shelves for bottles, two flat screens and art. The Owner (who often is behind the bar) is very friendly and after sitting for a few, will tell you about the history of the place.

A strong Martini is what you should come for and Blue Mirror doesn't disappoint. I recommend the Attitude Adjustment, which will quickly make you forget about your long day. The long bar (completely lit up in blue) provides plenty of seating. Menu items such as the catfish strips and whiting sandwich are made really well. There is also a large room upstairs that can be rented out for private events. DJ's spin classic House and Hip Hop on weekends. Ample parking on the side makes it easy and safe to get to.

The doors are open from noon to 11 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday and Saturday the doors close at 2 a.m.  Sunday, Monday and Tuesday closed

$6 Martinis 3pm - 8pm Wed - Sat.

Wondee Siam

792 9th Ave - Hell's Kitchen, New York
 212-459-9057

There are so many Thai restaurants in the neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen that you could be forgiven for wondering if this is known as little Thailand. But it’s really just that everyone loves Thai food! So for our latest date night out, I chose my favorite among all the options - The tiny (yet very popular), zero-ambience Wondee Siam.

There are two Wondee Siams within a block of each other. The original (and best among locals) is very small and seats about 12 people. It has a very modest interior. That's ok because the focal point here is the food. I don’t need colorful decorations or a giant fish tank to enjoy authentic Thai food, and that’s what you get.

Here you don’t have to worry that your waiter will assume you want a milder form of Thai. If there is a little red asterisk next to your item, you can be sure it is pretty spicy. The soups are delicious, especially the sinus-clearing tom yum, which was perfect for a cold winter night. Definitely a highlight of the meal

This is a BYOB spot and you’ll want to do so to complement the spicy food. Conveniently there is a friendly (and reasonably priced) wine and liquor store directly across the street! Great way to keep your bill down while still enjoying numerous drinks.

As for the main courses, there isn’t one that I haven't enjoyed yet. From the just-right sweetness of the sweet and sour shrimp to the tender curry chicken, It's always amazing and memorable.

Wondee Siam is one of those nondescript Asian restaurants NYC is full of. If it were not for the crowds outside, it might be one you could walk past a thousand times and never notice, one you could walk past a thousand times and never enter. Or, it’s one of those places you do eventually stop in to check out. And if that’s the case, you’re rewarded with – in my opinion- the best Thai food in the borough at great prices.

Lucali

575 Henry Street - Brooklyn - Carroll Gardens
(btwn Carroll Street & 1st Place)

Good pizza, good wine, and a tiny candle-lit room is our idea of a perfect date spot (doesn't hurt that Jay & Bey love it as well) - Lucali hits the mark with all of these. With a no reservation policy, your best bet is to arrive before they open at 6pm to put your name down, and grab a pregame drink at a nearby bar. Remember, not too many pizza places have 200+ 5-star reviews. Trust me, it is worth the wait.

What will make or break the chance of becoming a fan of Lucali  depends on one thing - how long you had to wait for your table. Honestly though, for us that’s part of the fun. Yes, it can be annoying to deal with an unpredictable situation, but for a pizza this good, we’re willing to deal with it. It’s all about knowing what to expect going in, and understanding that you might not end up with a table, no matter what they told you fifteen minutes ago. Want to save yourself some disappointment? Don’t come without a backup plan. But if you’re down to grab a couple of  bottles of wine, show up a half hour early, and pray that you get a table, you might get the chance to enjoy the best pizza this city has to offer!

Yes, it’s expensive for a pizza. $26 (Cash Only) is a lot to spend on a pie. But it’s so good, you won’t care. There will be a list of available toppings for the night, and if they don’t mention it, you can’t have it. Not to worry… I’m not sure it matters what you put on top. The thin and crispy crust, incredible sauce, and bubbly cheese are perfect. Just keep in mind there are few things better than fresh basil on pizza.

We also had the pleasure of meeting Chef/Owner Mark Iacono and talked briefly about his new restaurant on South Beach. Amazing food, atmosphere and conversation.

Verlaine

110 Rivington St. - Lower East Side
212-614-2494

Located on the corner of Rivington and Essex, Verlaine is a blend of uptown class and downtown edge. Often a large crowd on any given night, this hot spot is ideal for romantic dinner dates, ladies night, and of course, happy hour.

It's still little well known to tourists (which is why we love it) and it continues to be a favorite among locals, the main appeal being the $5.00 happy hour deal 7 days a week!

In the city that never sleeps, finding quality cocktails for dirt-cheap is easier said than done. Verlaine goes one further and tricks your mind into believing you are at a five star establishment.

Extending the happy hour deal until 10pm daily, Verlaine serves their signature cocktail – the Hanoi Lychee Martini – endlessly, and boy are we happy about that. A simple and strong recipe, consisting of a perfect mix of vodka, lychee juice and a splash of pineapple, this is a flavorful drink that rarely disappoints. Have a few without worrying about the tab.

While it remains the crowd favorite, there are other noteworthy choices offered during the popular happy hour like the Vietnamese Bloody Mary, and  their fresh-made Sangria.

** Vintage '01 Sundays and Mondays till 10PM - Verlaine rolls back its prices to its 2001 debut!

$4 Hanoi Lychee Martinis,

$4 Vietnamese Bloody Marys,

$4 Sangrias, $4 Red and White House wine,

$4 Cocktails,

2 for 1 Yeungling Bottle Beers

8Th St. Wine Cellar

Why is this a go-to spot?
$18 bottles of select wine from 4pm-7pm! (Bring new definition to the term- pop bottles!)

In addition to the wine, there’s a full bar and a good selection of bottled beers. Come early, this place fills up quickly. One of the best happy hours in the city!

The weather was perfect, so we decided to check out the buzz surrounding Brooklyn Flea's latest version of Smorgasburg (called Smorgasbar)at South Street Seaport.

Pizza Moto, Asia Dog, as well as beer and booze filled slushies were highlights of the day!

1st we enjoyed 2 veggie dogs from Asia Dog - 1 Mel & Steve and 1 Mash. The asian inspired topping for the M&S was a great tasting sesame slaw. The Mash was topped with potato chips! 2 for $9 so the pricing was good. Both tasted excellent and were filling!

Pizza Moto was next and we decided to try the Margherita. Very nice size for the price ($10). Made fresh from a brick-oven, the tomato sauce was so delicious we were considering a 2nd pie.

.

What I loved most about this smaller version of Smorgasburg are the lack of crowds and lines. Getting food was pretty quick. Hardly a wait for any of the options. Many picnic style seats were available. It's a pleasant space large enough to still give you an intimate feel. $6 for a beer, $12 for the boozy-slushy. Ours was filled with bourbon and as long as you tip they will "tip". Although the drink prices seemed a little high, we were having such a great time that pricing suddenly didn't matter as much.

After all the amazing food and drinks, we walked it off by crossing the Brooklyn Bridge. Beautiful, movie-like scenery from 1 of the greatest cities in the world. This was a great way to enjoy the weather. Highly recommended!

Hours of Operation

Brooklyn Oyster Party
Brooklyn Soda Works (cart)

Art Bar

52 8th Ave. - West Village

If you can't tell by now I love hidden bars and this Bar - Lounge is great anytime. Name is taken from the rotating art on the walls done by local artist. Spacious bar area in the front with large booths. But the reason this place makes my Best Of list is what you don't see...

Go all the way to the back and behind a curtain is an intimate candlelit lounge full of couches, chairs, a working fireplace and gallery exhibits.

Prices on food and drink stay on the low side from open to close making this a great late night spot. Kitchen is open late - 2:00am weekdays and to 3:00am weekends

Grab your honey, head to the back with one of the house specials (usually martinis) and just let this place set the mood.
