Graffiti 101: New York Subway Art of the 1970s and 80s

Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 6:30 pm

Museum of the City of New York.

In 1974, when he was just 14 years old, Chris Pape (aka Freedom)
started painting murals in abandoned freight train tunnels under

Riverside Park (see slideshow here).

Join Pape, now a veteran graffiti artist and author,
for an insider’s account of the New York City
subway graffiti movement between 1969 and 1989,
and a discussion of what it was like to stand in a tunnel with
subway cars racing past while trying to paint a train.

How did writers like Pape do it?

How did the city stop it?

What happened to graffiti art in New York once it moved off the trains?

Fly Fashion: Men's Plaid Outerwear

There's something masculine about a man in a nice lumberjack - however with a nice modern edgy flare to it.

So men, this look can been worn with a nice pair of oxford shoes and some skinny jeans. You also can dress this coat up by pairing it with a grey suit.

You can find coats like this at Urban Outfitters, Topman, and your local Thrift/Vintage Stores.

- Enaya K.

What He's Wearing:

Plaid Coat - L-train Vintage NYC

Music: Phony PPL - Nothing Special (Stream)

NothinG Special EP

"Phony Ppl either crash-landed from the past or the future: critics and fans can’t decide. Since popping up on New York City’s indie radar in 2011, the amorphous band has forged an entirely new sound built on vintage astral funk, colorful world music, and dusted-out hip-hop/R&B. Co-founded by writer/producer Elbee Thrie and keyboardist Aja Grant, the band flipped high school demo recordings into meditative self-released singles like “I Wish I Was A Chair” and “Statues,” and tours with like-minded experimental elders Theophilus London, Erykah Badu and The Roots.

Natives of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, the band has gained a global fanbase of early adopters including BBC6’s Giles Peterson and Tokyo streetwear icon Skatething—not bad for a D.I.Y crew that produced and recorded much of their output from a Nostrand Avenue brownstone"

Date Night: Panna II Garden Indian Restaurant

93 1st Ave NY, NY
(212) 598-4610

"Where Chili Pepper Lights Meet Christmas Tree Lights.”

We love the East Village and one of the many places that makes it such a great area is Panna II - and Indian comfort food place best known for its atmosphere. It's completely covered in Christmas lights all year round - giving you a New Years Eve and Mardi Gras vibe all in one!

Us locals call this block of 1st Ave "Curry Row" due to the interesting aspect that Panna II is located on the upper, top right corner of what is 3 separate restaurants in the exact same location, with the exact same christmas lights.

Panna II is the more popular of the 3 (It's one of Travel Channel star and famous  Chef Anthony Bourdain's favorite places to eat) Additionally, the restaurant is known for it’s owners, who stand outside of the stairs waving and claiming to be your friend in  order to persuade you into eating with them.

Keep in mind this is a BYOB joint so remember to take some sweet wine or beer if you prefer, to complement the traditional Indian dishes such as veggie samosas and chicken tikka masala - all of which are delicioso. Also take note that the food comes out fast and furious! Servers with hot plates whiz past you adding to the fun environment.

So if you are looking for a truly unique and interesting time, head over to Curry Row on 1st Ave.  You must try this place out at least once. Don’t let the forward Indian waiters scare you off. This place is full of little quirks that make it  more of an experience rather than just going out for some decent curry.

P.S. Let them know it's your birthday (or just pretend like us ) and enjoy delicious mango ice cream on the house!

Cheers!

Music: Milo and Otis - The Joy (Album Stream)

Can't Stop Now

"Meet Milo & Otis. Upon first meeting as freshmen at Brown University, Milo & Otis discovered their shared passion for music-making and live performance. They decided to let that shit marinate for five years before moving to Chicago and cooking up their first EP (Holiday!) in December 2011. Since settling in the Windy City, Milo & Otis have made a name for themselves in the up-and-coming music scene. Milo plays poetry & loop machines. Otis quite literally plays everything, especially bass. After seeing M&O live shows, fans marvel at how such massive sound could possibly come from such skinny people. Fans also claim to experience what they call “feelings” and often describe said “feelings” as intense, visceral, and chest-quaking.

What’s most unique about Milo & Otis is their imagination. Most bands play all of what they intend listeners to hear on their record. M&O only record half of what they write, and expect fans to recreate the hidden parts in their heads. Sort of like a mental math problem made of sugar, except without the math part. Simply put, Milo & Otis are adventure soul music: a road trip for your mind, a whizzing subway car for your heart, and sometimes even a party limo for your tuckus."

Milo & Otis Facebook

Looking forward to catching this band perform live!

Amazing album

Photo: Been busy rehearsing the band for our show tonight at Schubas Tavern! Doors at 8pm, M&O at 8:30! Hope to see ya there

the Revive Big Band

The musical styles, experience, and tastes of Revive’s members vary widely, but their collective mission is the same. “We’re carrying on, within the tradition of big bands, what would be relevant today,” bandleader Igmar Thomas says. “[We're] modifying the message and making it translatable, accessible to the people, so that they have something relevant to grasp on to. It represents that little bridge.”

Revive’s repertoire is an authentic gumbo, featuring original compositions by Thomas, as well as epic orchestrations of selected productions from different producers and notable hip-hop songs combined with the original sampled jazz record, all re-imagined and arranged into original works for a big band.”Our voice is one that has a foot deeply placed in the jazz roots and the tradition of that, à la Dizzy Gillespie and Count Basie – but also, another foot deeply invested in 2012, and so on. That’s the direction: Dizzy, Dilla, and us,” declares Thomas.
